From a young age, Ashley Morris only envisioned one career path: finance. When he started college at University of Nevada Las Vegas, he worked as a bank teller at Wells Fargo and quickly moved up the ranks and became one of the top performing brokers in the company by age 25. His future in portfolio management was looking bright and he had extra money to invest, so he sat down with a longtime friend to brainstorm new business ideas and both of them showed up at the table with just one: Capriotti’s. In college, Morris and his roommate were obsessed with Capriotti’s, an award-winning sandwich shop known for whole roasting turkeys every night. The two even broke their apartment lease just to move closer to a Capriotti’s so they could walk and get their favorite sandwiches. Ashley would eat Capriotti’s multiple times a week, sometimes for lunch and dinner. In 2005, Morris and his friend Jason Smylie became Capriotti’s franchisees. The pair quickly opened three locations in two years, and then did what they had never dreamed of – bought the entire sandwich company, which at the time had 36 locations. Now as CEO of Capriotti’s, Morris has guided the brand in more than tripling in size and has brought on a new team of high-level franchise investors. The company is now taking on an aggressive growth strategy, and plans to open 500 locations by 2025.
